Arc Welding Equipment
Arc welding is one of the most versatile and common welding techniques used in
industries worldwide. Some key arc welding equipment includes:
- Welding power source: Provides electric current to generate an arc between
the base metal and consumable electrode. The main types are welding
transformers for stick/TIG welding and inverter power sources for
MIG/flux-cored welding.
- Electrode holder: Holds the electrode and allows for proper arc gap formation
in stick welding. Water-cooled torch designs are used for TIG welding.
- Cables: Transmit welding current from the power source to the torch or rod
through appropriately sized electrode, ground and control cables.

Resistance Welding Equipment
Resistance welding is commonly used for mass production applications in
automotive and appliance manufacturing. The primary resistance welding
equipment includes:
- Welding transformers: Delivers low voltage and high current to heat metal
workpieces through resistance. The types are spot, seam and projection welders.
- Electrode assemblies: Apply pressure on the weld area and conduct welding
current through movable copper alloy electrodes. Water or oil cooling is
provided.
- Welding controls: Regulate current, voltage and welding time duration to
produce consistent welds based on programmed schedules or foot pedal actuation.
- Work clamping fixtures: Hold the metal parts securely in proper alignment and
contact during welding under high pressure.
- Welding guns: Mechanized welding heads that position electrode assemblies and
perform spot welding on an automated production line.
Other Support Welding Equipment
In addition to the primary welding power sources and torch/electrode setups,
some other equipment that supports welding operations includes:
- Welding Positioners: Devices that hold welding torches or parts in the
correct position for various welding orientations like overhead, vertical up
etc.
- Ventilation Systems: Extract welding fumes and particulate matter through
local exhaust to maintain a safe work environment.
- Welding Curtains/Screens: Provide protection from UV/IR radiation and help
contain welding sparks during open-air fabrication work.
- Welding Tables: Sturdy work surfaces, some with clamps or vises, to secure
and support parts being welded.
- Welding Consumables: Different types and sizes of filler rods, wires, fluxes,
gases and cutting consumables required for various processes.
- Welding Personal Protective Equipment: Gear like jackets, gloves, safety
boots essential for operator protection.
With the development of advanced welding technologies, other computerized
equipment is also being used for monitoring and controlling critical welding
parameters. Proper selection and maintenance of specialized welding equipment
enables fabrication of quality joints safely and efficiently.
